No Bogging Until the Spring of 2009

Unfortunately, all of our blog postings are being put on hold until the Spring of 2009. There are several reasons for this, but the main reason is family priorities. We'll continue to keep our websites and art resources current and blog again next year.

Best Wishes for the New Year!

Wendy Burton Photographs
Craig Krull Gallery

On September 3rd, Craig Krull Gallery opened Wendy Burton’s fourth solo exhibition at Craig Krull Gallery, entitled Trace Elements III, the artist continues to explore abandoned and decaying structures as subjects for her photographic archaeology of the not so distant past in American civilization. These vacant buildings are often the product of what Burton refers to as the “rust belt,” areas where industry has moved on, resulting in the disintegration of entire communities. In Tema Celeste, Shana Nys Dambrot wrote, “…these are undeniable compelling subjects, saturated in a sort of rural collapse…yet the morbid lyricism of Burton’s tone is suggestive rather than judgmental…[their] meaning built on cobwebs and ghost stories.” This exhibition also includes a portfolio of images entitled, “What Remains,” made in post-Katrina New Orleans.

Born in the city of San Jose, California, and living most of his life in Mexico, Agustin Castillo has been influenced by many cultures. Naturally, his artworks are fusions of amazingly crafted materials and methods. Castillo notes, “I always try to develop concepts that would help to canalize my emotions, ideas, and visual interpretations.” Linking several canvases with such materials as resin, acrylic, and paste, he adds texture and dimension to a very powerful visual encounter. Castillo’s complex process culminates to a seemingly minimal piece. The onlooker’s gaze slowly travels through the emotive and subtle colors and textures of his three-dimensional, abstract paintings.

Joanie San Chirico's work is unique with the incorporation of photography, paint, stitching and textiles. The viewer is almost challenged to decipher the actual composition of the painting. The artist integrates techniques to reflect on the past in an attempt to make sense of the future by utilizing the incongruity of hand stitching with the latest technology on silk and other textiles. This series combines these mediums to portray natural surfaces using imagery of the planet's fragile beauty.

The history of Art and Literature has been a provocative inspiration and, for me, an identification with the past. Ever fascinated by civilization in conflict, I have chosen the human figure by using plastic dollars, to evoke the connections between troubling eroticism and the pursuit of power. At first glance one might see this work as spiritually romantic, but on closer inspection, the viewer sees an alluring, powerful figure whose mysterious origins tend to drift to the dark side of human nature.

For the last 15 years his work has been inspired by the 17th century church santos, while pleasing to look at with their entire classic splendor, the overall theme becomes about sadness, power, and fear.

Judith Foosaner works exclusively in black and white, using form, rhythm, and energy to create her striking and subtle compositions. The pieces are large in scale and range from oil paintings on canvas to charcoal collages to drawings on paper. This is her second exhibition with the gallery.

Foosaner studied with Elmer Bischoff, David Hockney, R.B. Kitaj, and Mark Rothko at the University of California, Berkeley. Based in the Bay Area for many years, Foosaner taught at the California College of Arts, University of California, at Berkeley and the Wimbledon College of Art in London.

Carrie Seid's pieces are constructed using a plywood base, cut and formed sheet metals (copper, brass and aluminum), and silk. The metal forms an understructure, which supports a tautly stretched layer of silk. Modulated color (in the form of underpainting or dyed silk) is sometimes used to enhance depth, structure and dimension. The additional step of oiling the fabric “skin” creates various degrees of translucence, allowing the outer layer to be visually penetrable - a watercolor rendered in three dimensions.

Originally from Chicago, Carrie Seid currently lives in Tuscon and teaches at the University of Arizona. Seid received her B.F.A. from The Rhode Island School of Design and her M.F.A. from Cranbrook Academy of Art.
